Security that fits a small business

Most attacks on small businesses start with an email or a stolen password. We put practical layers in place to stop them, and people who watch for what gets through.

The threats that actually reach Cherokee County offices

Small businesses rarely face the movie version of hacking. What we see are fake invoices, hijacked email accounts and ransomware that arrives through a link or an unpatched computer. The FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center received 25,936 complaints from Georgia in 2025, with reported losses of about $535 million. That puts Georgia in the top ten states for both. Business email compromise, where a criminal impersonates a vendor or executive to redirect a payment, is consistently among the most costly crime types in those reports.

Industries that are common in Cherokee County are frequent targets. Builders and suppliers move large payments to subcontractors and vendors, which makes changed bank details in an email a real danger. Medical and dental offices hold patient records that are valuable to criminals and covered by HIPAA. Accounting and law firms hold tax returns, bank details and confidential client files.

What we put in place

  • Multifactor authentication on email, remote access and every admin account, set up so it isn't a daily nuisance for staff.
  • Email filtering that catches phishing, spoofed senders and malicious attachments before they reach inboxes, plus a simple button to report anything suspicious.
  • Endpoint detection and response on every computer and server. It goes beyond antivirus by spotting suspicious behavior, such as files being encrypted, and isolating the machine.
  • Alert review: security alerts go to people who look at them and act, not to an inbox nobody reads.
  • Patching of operating systems and applications on a schedule, with exceptions documented.
  • Account hygiene: former employees removed promptly, admin rights kept to the few who need them, and shared passwords replaced with a password manager.
  • Firewall and network separation, so guest Wi-Fi, cameras and shop-floor equipment can't reach your file server or accounting system.
  • Security awareness training with short lessons and realistic test phishing emails, so staff learn what to look for.
One habit stops a lot of fraud: confirm any change to payment instructions by calling the vendor at a number you already have, never one in the email. We help you make that a written policy.

When something goes wrong

Even with good protection, incidents happen. If a mailbox is compromised or a laptop is infected, we contain it, find out what was touched, restore clean systems and help you decide whether you need to notify clients, patients, your insurer or your bank. Having a written incident plan before you need it makes those first hours much calmer.

Cyber insurance and compliance

More insurers now ask detailed questions before they renew a cyber policy: Do you use MFA everywhere? Do you have endpoint detection? Are backups kept offline or immutable? We help you answer those questions accurately and close the gaps that would raise your premium or put a claim at risk. For medical practices, we support the technical safeguards in the HIPAA Security Rule and help you document them for your risk analysis.

Where we start

A security review looks at your Microsoft 365 settings, sign-in logs, device protection, firewall, backups and who has admin access. You get a short report ranked by risk with plain explanations, not a list of scan codes. Many of the most important fixes, such as turning on MFA and blocking legacy sign-ins, can be done within the first couple of weeks.

Security isn't a one-time project. New staff join, vendors change, and attackers try new tricks. After the first round of fixes, we keep watching alerts, review sign-in activity and admin accounts each month, and bring a short security update to every quarterly review. When a new risk shows up, such as a phishing campaign aimed at local contractors or a flaw in a common application, we act on it and tell you what we did.

Questions about cybersecurity

We already have antivirus. Isn't that enough?

Not anymore. Traditional antivirus catches known malware but often misses stolen-password logins, phishing and newer ransomware. MFA, email filtering and endpoint detection cover the gaps.

Will security tools slow my staff down?

Done well, very little. Staff approve sign-ins on their phone now and then, and suspicious emails simply don't arrive. We tune settings so they protect you without getting in the way.
